Are Your Medications Hurting Your Kidneys?

Some medications can put extra strain on your kidneys, and many people take them daily without realizing the risk.

Painkillers & NSAIDs

Drugs like ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin ), naproxen (Aleve), and even high-dose aspirin can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, leading to long-term damage if used frequently. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or existing kidney issues, these meds can be even riskier.

Antibiotics & Kidney Damage

Some antibiotics—like aminoglycosides (gentamicin) and antifungals (amphotericin)—are known to be nephrotoxic (toxic to the kidneys). If you’re prescribed these, your doctor should monitor your kidney function closely.

High Blood Pressure & Diabetes Meds

If you have chronic kidney disease, some BP meds or diabetes meds may need to be adjusted because the kidneys can’t clear them as well. This is why regular check-ups and kidney function tests are so important!

What Can You Do?

Avoid long-term NSAID use—ask your pharmacist for safer alternatives.
If you’re prescribed a strong antibiotic, ask if your kidney function needs monitoring.
Keep up with regular kidney function tests if you take meds that impact your kidneys.
